Larry Stroman is a widely overlooked comic artist that worked on X-Factor for Marvel in the 90's. He really brought some different looks to many of the mutants that we'd seen drawn the same way over and over. He also did an amazing (and horribly distributed) book called Tribe. It came out during the Image boom, comics known for their all-star artists and not for the stories.Tribe only had 3 or 4 issues that I know of. Anyway, I heard that Stroman is getting back into the comics game after a decade hiatus. He's done a few small issues here and there for Marvel in the last year, and he is working on a Bishop miniseries, which should be dope.

Michael Schmelling’s original intent for Atlanta was to create a photo book based on Outkast’s seminal record Aquemini; but as he immersed himself in the city’s hip-hop culture, he found a different story to tell, focusing on the pulse of the future.

The photographs in Atlanta portray Atlanta hip-hop as a living, breathing, growing thing to be found anywhere and everywhere, from strip clubs to the alcohol-free teen rap-party scene. The book also includes a series of exclusive interviews with the likes of producer The-Dream and notoriously elusive André 3000 himself, conducted by GQ editor Will Welch. The true pride of Atlanta, though, is in the included downloadable mixtape of unsigned ATL rappers, including Pill, Them Concrete Boyz, and cover-photo subject Lil Texas.

“We found kids who were the same age as (Outkast’s) André and Big Boi were when they were first making records,” Schmelling notes. “There were a thousand YouTube videos of kids dancing in their living rooms, beats and songs were being made on PCs and uploaded to SoundClick or SpitYoGame. Something new was happening. And something new kept happening.” Schmelling decided to document that groundswell, spotlighting hip-hop as a lifestyle, wherever and whenever it was. “A year in Atlanta hip-hop,” says Schmelling, “is like five years in any other genre.”

Alamo Drafthouse, which hosts an impressive lineup of illustrators, recently commissioned this poster by Rich Kelly. It's fanfuckingtastic. Atlanta's own Methane Studios did a great one for Westworld as well. With people like Tyler Stout, Jay Ryan, and Rich Kelly drawing posters for you this little art film movie house in Austin has got to be a pretty special place.

On a side note, has anyone ever seen Westworld? It is the EXACT same story as Jurassic Park, written by the same dude (Crichton). Simply replace robotic dinosaurs with a robotic Yule Brenner and you've got yourself quite a flick!

Unearthly Trance ' V' LP 2010, Relapse Records

The new Unearthly Trance LP strait up slays shit. It crushes and smashes like a building collapsing on your head. The thing lurches and weirds out and most thoroughly is bonesmashingly heavy. Nothing generic at all only majestic sludge/doom at its most wrecking. Very creative and haunting and slooooow, and the sonics produced for maximum damage. It takes you there dude. These guys are from NY and have been around for long enough to have this be their 5th record duh its called V. Maybe if Pissed Jeans and Burning Witch dudes somehow got together? This is a great record, artwork by Glyn Smyth (UK) and the dude Sanford Parker engineered it and he makes wicked records as well. You should totally listen to this, it rules.

Defeatist 'Sixth Extinction' LP 2010, Willowtip Records

NYC grind that grinds real nasty and tech and stomps ass. Somebody wrote they are the best grind band in NY right now and so I had to check it. Sure enough it slays with the very sharp searing hot mess razor guitar sound, pummeling drums. It sounds a bit like the Magrudergrind and Kill the Client LPs from last summer (those so ruled) and this one is right up there. Heavy Napalm Death sound but still a modern grind approach, some of the dudes from Anodyne who I never really cared for but this is wicked. This is their second full length, the other one Sharp Blade Sinks Deep Into Dull Minds(2009) was also bangin'.

I recently went to Sarasota with my homegirl. It could have been super lame but it wasn't at all. This is because we stopped lots of times to see things of interest; Florida highways suck ass and you get obliterated by endless pro life billboards and things like that so any reason to get off the highway and take them state roads is worth it. We went to a crystal spring and it was really cold and there were turtles swimming around it which ruled. Saw lots of farms. And the beach was really long and the sand seemed false. And we saw tons of leather skin havers and pancake titties and stuff like that. I bought a fish sandwich from a Mason and saw a jaguar. Then it was time to come home. I'll get back to writing about records sometime soon, I thought it'd be cool to share some trip photos. I hope everyone has an enriching Autumn, it has begun already! yo!

Alvin Lucier 'Bird and Person Dyning/The Duke of York' LP 1975, Cramp Records

The godfather of experimental noise getting down, descending the depths of strangeness and sonic invention. Born in 1931, Lucier was a mad scientist musician for real and this is but one of his amazing works. Recorded 1972 in the MOMA, this piece 'explored many composites of one sound,' but whatever it sounds way fucked up. He approached his music much like a composer but was mainly interested in the interaction of sound with and through different spaces and shapes. Anyways It crept on me the other day while I was chilling out and next thing I knew there was the scariest 1930s sounding song panned and delayed all fucked up, mesmerized me. Before I looked into who was responsible for this strange sonic hallucination of mine, I sat and enjoyed it for some time and it kept getting weirder and so did I. This is very cool and has some reissues available also.

Christian Mistress 'Agony and Opium' LP 2010, 20 Buck Spin Records

This Christian Mistress shit is something else. With a ripping power metal sound like a direct kick to an eyeball, this is female fronted straight up Heavy Metal. Way different than just that though because it sounds like this could have come out when Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden and classic fucking bad ass metal was ripping hard then. Her vocals definitely nail the whole time capsule Metal thing as she sings like back in the day, but it definitely is hard to deal with a couple of times. Anyways when she shuts up the guitars start SHREDDING big time. Harmony solos all over the place I'm saying it stomps ass. I admit I'm not a huge 80s music guy but this throwback shit slays proper, out now. And they play here in ATL on October 19 with Thrones.

White Boss s/t LP, 2010 Perennial Records

I enjoyed this quite a bit, crunchy fuzzy hardcore, drawn out and not very tough and the songs too long. With a heavy 80s punk sound like Die Kruzen or Discord bands, but from Washington so with a sort of modern northwest coast Sex/Vid looseness, this is on the stranger end of hardcore today and so that does it for me, as it is creative and strong. The songs blend together and it is sleepy at times, though it definitely does pound and lurch around with sludge but this is not Metal at all. I heard a demo before, but this one sounds way better to these ears. And they play here on Tuesday the 31st, with them wild ass Bukkake Boys so things will surely get interesting..or else!

This fool had like 15 of them going vertically straight up a wall somewhere in the Bowery. It was probably some kind of legal because Manhattan is almost impossible to paint and it was such a high profile spot. But a triple quadruple OG like cope 2 can do whatever the fuck he wants. This fool is one of a handful of people to ever King this entire city, trains and streets. And he's ill as fuck, I hope some of youse (haha youse) have seen the Cope2 Kings Desttroy vid. I have that bitch on VHS tape and I've had it since like 1998, so I have been crunk on this fools shit for mad long. If you haven't seen it, we'll watch it sometime when I'm back in the barrio, where I belong.

And another nyc graffiti experience that is so ill I have a really hard time telling you about it second, but if anyone deserves to be spoken of first, its King Cope. But anyway. So on my first trip to the Lower East Side, coming up out of the subway I saw a fucking pristine MQ throw up. It was on the first landing on the stairs just under the street. There wasn't any other ill shit in that spot but a million tags and half assed shit like that. The MQ was the classic joint he came out with like 30 years ago or something, and silver and red. It was in the dead ass center of the wall, covering up a gang of wack old shit, and no one has caught any tags even REMOTELY close to it. This is such an ill thing to see as MQ is one of the true OG triple OG LES hardcore gangsters. And I say "gangster" with all the respect and recognition of a trill ass motherfucker that the term can carry. MQ is one of the pioneers of New York Hard Core and founders of DMS crew. If you don't know DMS crew you better ask somebody. Doc Marten Skins, Doc Marten Stomp, Dirty Money Syndicate. They are basically an NYHC gang comprised of the gnarliest old heads from the old days who have not turned their back on kicking dudes asses and doing illegal shit as they have gotten older. MQ was around the LES and alphabet city when it was a bombed out wasteland of blocks and blocks and blocks of abandoned buildings. One of the most lawless places in-the-fuck-ing-world at the time. The urban refuse and waste that begat such bands as Agnostic Front and the Cro-Mags etc. MQ still gets wild respect on the street because he earned the shit out of it, the hard way, over and over again. I'll flick the throwie one of these days, I doubt it is going anywhere unless the buff gets it.

SFN 'Itching' 7" EP 2010, Drugged Conscience Records

Another EP from these guys, this shit rips. When a band that already rules puts out rawer and more insane sounds, that shit slays. Their older Fouled Nest 7" was written of here long ago and this Itching release is a meaner and better version no doubt. Drums on blast eythang on blast. They added some weird samples and gritty ambiance= a thicker, dissonant SFN that shreds. "An endless blast of bong loads that will crush your cranium like a hunk of Wisconsin cheese" is what they said on the 625 label.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed + Insect Warfare split 5", 2008 Relapse

These bands need no intro as I've talked about them mad times on here but for some reason I never said this split of theirs ruled. So now I say this shit slays and thats the end of that. The ANb side flips out for three and a half minutes and IW of course grinds minds like always, now defunct but always horribly vicious. ANb kill, I'm always impressed with their punishing mutant sonics of drum machine grind with plenty of samples and hatred and generally confusing innards. Artwork by Florian Bertmer.

Lightning Swords of Death + Valdur split LP, 2008 Cult War/Bloody Mountain

Not shredding and having a name like that would be totally fucked up but fortunately that is not the case at all. Lightning Swords of Death is total heavy metal, a black death metal sound that they nail well. Their side of the split is heavier and more death metal than the Valdur side, which is wicked black metal, buzzing and frozen and equally fierce but in a very different way. LSD are from LA, Valdur from a place called 'Mammoth Lakes,' CA. I thought this split totally kicked ass and I had never heard either of these groups before, which rules. Again, the artwork slays so hard, by Farron Loathing.

Leviathan + Archerontas 'Sic Luceat Lux' split, 2009 Zyklon-B Productions

Another black metal split but this time with US wizard Leviathan, one of the most wicked acid priests of the dark stereo arts, and the Greek black metal band Archerontas. This split strait rules also. Both of these bands fit well together to make this release slay all around. Not sure if this Leviathan material is from before or after the excellent Massive Conspiracy Against All Life LP, his supposed final record. Regardless this is fantastic layered mayhem, unholy riffs and drums that steer the whole thing deep into madness. The Archerontas side is good but the Leviathan stands out as always, hypnotizing and weaving and all around wicked. This release saw all kinds of limited media, including bible like A5 formats and whatnot. And the Leviathan side has dual acoustic guitars which obviously is way metal.

Acid Bath 'When the Kite String Pops' LP 1994, Rotten Records

Southern death sludge from almost two decades ago that shreds. If you smoked weed in the South during the 90s then you inevitably heard it but this shit is a permanent slayer. Strolling down memory lane to back in the day, the southside of town was full of metalheads. They all skipped school all the time and smoked weed all day and listened to Metallica and Acid Bath and Pantera all day. My homeboy was down with one of those said dudes because he moved from my neighborhood to the southside. So anyways even though I knew Metallica shredded, I hated Pantera and I was not into Acid Bath either because I thought they sounded like Soundgarden and that sort of thing, which I had determined at that time to be not cool anymore. But the years have been very kind because I guess I heard it enough times for it to start to destroy and now I think of it with total respect. And I know why stoners would skip school to hit a skull jester bong or some shit to Acid Bath all day. Their songs are epic and singer Dax Riggs is a worthy poet and they shred. They were like the Louisiana version of a death metal Sleep. Or a more heavy Skynyrd sound mixed with Buzzoven or EyeHateGod or some shit and anyways every Southern metalhead loves this. There are even Blue Velvet and Clockwork samples on here. Their next and final record 'Paegan Terrorism Tactics' (1996) was ok but this one rules. Also the cover painting was made by John Wayne Gacy which adds that extra layer of 90s whatever to it. AND whoa the 'kite string popping' is scary. I've always wondered why there are balloons on the cover instead of kites.

The guys from Karp/ The Whip/ Wrangler Brutes/ BigBusiness/ Melvins/ etc done did it again, oh my it slays. This time with a dose of the gritty sound, heavy and pounding and designed to bitch slap presidents and world leaders alike with a vicious backhand. These men deliver the goods each time and the B side is a G.I.S.M. cover...they aren't fucking around at all. And how it looks obviously rules and White Shit is such a rad name. Oh hell fuck naw!

Dead Prez + DJ Drama 'Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz' mixtape, 2010

They finally met up to do a Gangsta Grillz tape and it pretty much stomps ass. Militant shit that you would expect DP to keep discussing but over all types of radio beats and singles that mostly sucked but now they are good because Dead Prez slays. Newton, Seale, Garvey, and X and MLK are all mentioned a thousand times but for the sake of those who've never heard of them that are listening, thats a good idea. Practical like an intel brief for street soldiers in their rides. Reaching Bigger Goals/Real Big Guns/Real Black Girls/Ready to Bust Gats/Rollin Big Ganga/etc.

BIPPP 'French Synth-Wave 1979/85' compilation, 2008 Everloving/Born Bad Records

This comp really kicks some ass and is also way weird. It is all kinds of groups from this movement and I, who know very little about that sort of thing, was super impressed on how wicked this was. Its so styled out and the beats are all futuristic sounding from the past. Electro is rad and many of the records I've reviewed on here such as Mr.Oizo and Daft Punk likely took their cues from these French groups. Most of the songs are great, some are most crucial like the Deux and Visible ones, and the Mary Möör song 'Pretty Day,' which I heard last weekend being spun by some otherwise sorry ass DJ and it weirded me the fuck out but was awesome to hear. Anyone would like this because it rules.

Prurient 'The History of Aids' LP 2002, Hospital Productions

Noise/Power Electronics is the sole chapter of my record collection that I approach with fear, and rightly so. These records are different than ones you listen to usually. Anyways this man Prurient is a heavy hitter in the realm of such and I got this slayer on LP the other day after it had been unearthed from a release of 1000 in 2002, so I was real psyched that happened. But then it hurt me when I listened to it later on when I was drawing. It is so harsh and intense but put together masterfully. All of the lyrics on it were appropriated from the Sufi mystic poet Rumi, who lived in the 13th Century and is interesting to learn about. This record will break your head on the concrete.

A pretty good record, I found myself listening to it a few times, and laugh at how the Black Flag grit sound became more popular with the tough guy hardcore bands this year. It has a cool sound to it but I bet tons of markus' are into it.

Big Boi 'Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty' LP 2010, Purple Ribbon/Def Jam

Yeah this one smashes, most of it, it would have made the review but there is some strait bullshit bad songs on it. Anyways as a whole this is creative, future rap music. When it is good it strait rules. 13 years in the game, also he and I both are from Savannah so wtf. It ought to be bumped if you live in Georgia or are from here because this man has respect all over the world for being the shit.

Angelo Badalamenti 'Soundtrack from Twin Peaks' CS, 1992 Warner Brothers

French WWI trench, The 'Forbidden Zone', Bois-Hauts, Les Eparges, Lorraine, France.

The 'Forbidden Zone', where the land undulates with bisecting shell craters. The mature beech and pine forests that cover the hills above the city of Verdun are home to some of the Great War's most bitter fighting, as many as 150 shells fell for every square meter of this battlefield. 'The Battle of Verdun' as well as being the longest Battle of 'The Great War' also has the ignominy of being the first test of modern industrialised slaughter. Not for nothing was the battlefield of Verdun known to the soldiers who fought in it, as 'The Mincer', where over the entire period of the war almost a million men became casualties. Recent estimates made by The French interior Ministry state at least 12 million unexploded shells lie undiscovered in the hills overlooking the City of Verdun.

The d'mineurs work in the areas designated 'Zone-Rouge' after the Armistice of 1918. Today the forest still remains out-of-bounds to the general public due to the continuing hazzard of the explosive remnants of war. The Department for the Interior, (France), estimate that there are twelve million unexploded shells from WWI, in the Verdun sector alone.

Mr. Oizo 'Analog Worms Attack' LP 1999, F Communications

This is the straight up masterpiece from French beatslayer Mr. Oizo. Nothing new about it, this record kills and its been wrecking the living shit out of stereos for over a decade. Some of the tightest beats ever are on this record. They are perfect and they melt everything because they are so wicked. Now don't get me wrong, there are just a few, like barely, some shit on here that I can't get with, but that is because this is French house music, and the times I can't get on it are the parts that fall under the house music part. And I know that this is a record review column with a megaton of integrity to maintain, so yeah right would I ever fool anyone by reviewing a house music record?! Oh hell no. This is more like music that aliens listen to while they smoke weed and do gang shit or some weird shit like that. It is so heavy through most of it, all fuzzed out, explode your head 808 bass hits but then it has loops that you'd hear somewhere lame like an elevator. He calls it 'dirty house.' Oizo slays this shit. His name is Quentin Dupieux and all his music and movies since this LP have been rad but weird as shit. This dude paved the way for groups like Justice and they're down and collaborated mad times so you know, he is the OG shit. You could easily loose your mind to this record, anyways I had to review it sometime. And also Flat Eric is the homie.

been geekin' out hard on some afghanistan lately. tryin' to understand how a place can be so resistant to the power of foreign militaries + macdonalds/wal-marts. thinking about how to appropriate said powers of resistance into my own personal lifestyle. dont think im going to start here tho:

this flick is about powerful afghan warlords who get their kicks and vaunt their power amongst themselves by buying young dudes and dressing them up like girls and training them to dance and sing [via michael jackson/justin timberlake] for all their friends and then compete to get with them (by way of sex) afterwards. i saw this one on the frontline website for a while but never wanted to watch it cause i have a weak heart and thought, as a former childcare professional, such content might actually kill me. turns out what struck me most was the similarities between this so called "bacha bazi" culture and the ways in which we exploit children right here at home (US of A). also the resiliency of the kids who are just trying to be alive and make sense of the fucked up world they've by chance gotten caught up in. you can see the film in its entirety here.

on a lighter note, adam curtis is (i think) making some films about afghanistan as we speak. he keeps a pretty thorough record of his thoughts and musings as well as links to crazy old bbc footage on his blog. lots of crazy stories and events that it seems history has forgotten. its a lot to digest so take your time.

So this is a tour 7" from Texas d-beat rippers World Burns To Death, and the Sapporo hardcore total slayers Slang. It is a rad 7" and each band brings what you would expect. The real reason is that we saw them play the other night at the warehouse and it strait ruled! Seeing Japanese hardcore happen is wicked; watching WBTD was wicked also. The 7" is rad. How come Japanese dudes sound insane and harder than whoever else? However it works out Slang killed it the other night and tomorrow night when Bastard Noise plays that is going to slay too. Plus its the solstice so the day will stretch longer than ever other day in the year. Bim! And right now I'm chilling at home with a certified killer from the army and that shit is weirding me out- whoa.

Crow 'The Beating of the Wings of Destruction' EP, 1998/2010 Crow Records/Prank Records

To celebrate how much this band is the truest form of 'the tits,' here is an EP of theirs from 12 years ago, repressed again in 2007, and now again but this time on a picture disc. Limited every time, it was recorded prior to the melonsmashing Bloody Tear LP, so unless you are a total markus you already know that this thing is a murderer. How come these guys can destroy shit so totally? So confusing to think about. Anyways the first side is a 7 minute proof of how they are the nastiest and most beat you to death guild masters ever, the second is four songs including a version of 'Last Chaos,' which they have been playing for like twenty years and oppressive always. This band is so rad. Thanks for the shirt Bitey! I try and treat it like I would a tuxedo/the golden fleece. How hard would you flip your shit and jump out the window, if when the Japan team comes out to play in the World Cup, they had the Crow horned skull stitched into their kit. Watain 'Lawless Darkness' LP 2010, Season of Mist

Four years have passed since the release of Sworn to the Dark, and now Watain has crawled out of their Satanic crypts to further desecrate shit. This time the record is called Lawless Darkness, and how much does it rip. A million rips. As one of the biggest names in Swedish Black Metal, Watain still destroy shit. Their Bathory worship sound has grown stronger with Lawless Darkness, and they've strengthened their Black Magick sound many dark wizard levels higher. The guitars are sharper and more slaying, the blast beats crush shit with more intensity than before. The vocals sound like hymns, park of a theatre or a dark Mass or something like that. To make real the suggested ritual importance of listening to this record, of which Watain place lots of significance on as they are on some Black Magick shit, the record is huge and very strong and fills up the whole room as the production is so powerful and heavy as a mausoleum. The literature produced by the band to accompany their LPs is always very interesting and furthers their aesthetic of being more than a band and more than music, more like a cult, a religion with mystic magick and shit like that. So on that, Lawless Darkness is available on 2xLP, or...you can get the grimoire version, housed in a book of spells style leather case, the inside has a metal Watain medallion. And a flag. And some rings. And a black candle, wrapped in special Watain ritual paper, and ten Tarot cards, one for each of the songs on this record, all designed and mystified by the singer, E.Danielsson. Say what you will, I find the book set over the top propaganda shit to be cool. Who else does shit like that? The illusion created by Watain and other similar bands (Sunn o))) for example), who place lots of emphasis on everything concerning the band to be perceived as an experience, a trip, and place lots of detail on that, it is an illusion. But an illusion, that encourages listening to that shit to be a thought provoking journey, and that rules. Heavy Metal. And anyways all of the artwork is so wicked.

we rented this film last night, upon several recommendations. i dimly had heard about it when it made a theatrical release in the US, but i think i blinked and missed it. apparently it played in even the most cinematically-minded of towns for about a week.

this thing is a worthy return to the era when even bad horror films were good. it both is set in and filmed as though it were really the late 1970's or early 1980's. aim your eyes toward the title shot, for instance :
the thing is a taut, relatively short film, with a fairly standard basic horror movie plot device (the opening sequence begins with a brief excursus on the belief, in the 1980's, in satanic ritual abuse cults, and how the film is based on true and unexplained events) but one that manages deftly to avoid almost all the all-too-common pitfalls of making a genre film at this late stage. it does this, in my opinion, by virtue of its relentless cultivation of slow tension (underpinned by a creepily minimal soundtrack), and its wise avoidance of drawn out chase scenes and stupid cumulatively gory murder scenes, as well as of over-explication of the mechanism that represents the evil threat. i watch a lot of horror movies and was entirely in the realm of a queasy sense of foreboding the whole time. this isn't the smartest film in the world, but it is the smartest strictly genre film i have seen in quite a while, whose efficacy lies in its willingness to forgo the (seemingly) easy ploy of constant shock and physical violence for the methodical psychological violence of a claustrophobic mood that renews without hamfisting the generic touchstones of horror movies. when the gore comes, it is almost as a relief. recommended.

Ghast 'May the Curse Bind' LP 2010 Flenser Records

Whoa this is the shit. So pleased I am, to have been able to satiate my hunger for kult riffs and lurching grittiness once more, for Ghast hath answered my prayers. Blackened blackness from Wales, this is their smashing debut release, though the band did some other stuff under a different name before this. This is the best blackened doom in some time for me. The funeral hammer drums and bass kick the shit out of shit. I hear quite a bit of 'De Mysteriius' era Mayhem influence on this, not an easy feat to pull off because that record is legendary. The three members of Ghast shred through five fine heavy metal songs this on this LP and the endless nods to mid 90s treble soaked sludge Black Metal, pure raw blackness, makes it rule even harder. Lots of slow dirges and bleakness make the record just straight slay, over and over. The 2xLP preorder is happening right now, though the record is two years old, and really proper.

watching a film by adam curtis is what i wish high school history class would have been. a roughly chronological narrative supplemented by contemporary images and good music, slanted by the 'teachers' bent, but unambiguously so. curtis' talent for editing as well as his penchant for perusing hours upon hours of archival footage emerging with brilliant gems of last the century's most influential figures at their most vulnerable are remarkable. his critics call him a propagandist. tho i believe this is true i dont find it to be objectionable. i find in curtis no pretense toward a kind of broad 'academic' objectivity, rather his work seems to be deeply grounded in a philosophy and interpretation of history entirely his own. i like this because curtis' obvious personal bent, by virtue of its presence within the work, creates a space for the viewer's position to emerge and allows for a sort of discourse/dialectic to take place (inasmuch as that is possible while 'taking in' a film). I think for this same reason i enjoy listening to xxxtream AM radio or watching strange internet videos of alieunz-conspiritors-theorizers talk about the next ascension of humanity, tho curtis is far from one of 'those' and the discussions are much more civil and fruitful(?). Here are the first parts of three of his films made for the bbc.

Total Abuse 'Mutt' LP 2010, Post Present Medium

Hi weirdos, this is the newest offering from Total Abuse and I've been listening to it through the past week. It was whatever when I first heard it, but several spins later, that shit has started to slay. And now, it rules. I know you know what I am talking about. And anyways how gratifying the relationship of earning love for an LP is. This Total Abuse LP isn't the best record ever or anything like that, but its a nice one that shreds and is creative and whatnot. I usually gravitate to the other side of hardcore like this. This is sloppy and nasty and obnoxious but Total Abuse are ill because they make it also be fierce and threatening. Mutt is more aggressive and nastier and faster then their first LP which was all crunchy and raw and I artsy or whatever. These guys are from Austin TX and this is the hardcore worship of ugly and bad sounding shit, but it works and they're heavy and rad. I suppose there are a whole assload of bands with a similar sound these days but alas, I don't listen to this sort of hardcore so fuck that shit Total Abuse kills. 1349 'Demonoir' LP 2010, Prosthetic Recordings

Last month the new 1349 came out and it shreds, like a million chainsaws to a library of Bibles. But before that, maybe you guys recall that a few months back Revelations of the Black Flame(2009) was reviewed by myself, anyways I thought that one ruled, which it does. But I was almost alone in that belief- 1349 critics, in their caves, dungeons, and nerd lairs in their mom's basements worldwide, thought it totally sucked, was boring, all filler no killer. But yeah right, it slayed. Anyways they return on Demonoir to punish shit, to slice the throat of the sheep who thought Revelations was weak. Unholy as ever, this LP is a return to the Black Metal Grind sound that they are masters of, lightning fast drums from Frost, also of Satyricon, one of the masters of Black Metal drums. The razorblade guitars attack with the evilest of riffs over and over, all tangled up in the drums straight destroy. Bludgeoning, to excruciating, horribly demonic and miserable the whole time...sooo wicked. In between the songs on the LP are interludes entitled 'Temple of Set XI-XVII,' noise compositions are frightful and lurking that lead into the Heavy Metal like a tunnel does, were no doubt a call to the prior LP, soaked with dark, ambient coffin style noises. I feel this to be a fantastic 1349 record, it sounds huge, they are bad as fuck, from Norway. The LP comes out soon I think.

Nails 'Unsilent Death' LP 2010, Six Feet Under Records

Salutations. On deck is the new Nails LP, man oh man it kills. Do you like the super thick intersection of hardcore and grind? Are you into the recent onslaught of bands that punish with mid 90s emulation? If you are then this is the tits for you. The harshed out and low end heavy songs on this LP will take you 15 minutes to hear so you may as well listen to it 2 or 3 times to get the full idea. These fools remind me of From Enslavement-era Napalm Death, but mostly slow dirges where Napalm Death would have been grinding. Fans of Brutal Truth also would be into this, not so sure about the Dropdead comparison as Six Feet Under stated. It has the rawness and weight and overall noisiness of classic grind but alas, once again the dude from Converge produced it, which is an embarrassing first here on theArticles, as last week's LP was produced by him. Anyways I don't make the rules but I've been banging this fairly often throughout the week and so it rips right. I suppose it has traces of the 'tough guy' sound but these guys are from Los Angeles so its ok. This is a smashing LP. Not sure about the cover art though, hanging dudes= suspect. The jams inside slay though. Congrats on your show babygirl + cheers to you 30 Centavos, on your birthdate. U Way!

pittsburgh veterans (i believe from warzone wymyn among other groups) do noisy punk/hardcore with the influence of flipper and later black flag looming large, but stranger. weird vibes not unlike pissed jeans but rawer and less streamlined.

Black Breath 'Heavy Breathing' LP 2010, Southern Lord Recordings

Greetings Warriors, here an offering from the kult robes over there at Southern Lord, who are always pushing blackened records, and to my surprise they are putting out something like this crossover hardcore record. It sounds like part of the wave that may or may not have something to do with bands who make tough sounding hardcore, that sounds a certain way, and has produced bands that lean on the Heavy Metal side of things because it is currently the thing, karate kicks and floor punchings and stuff aside, they worship Converge and what do you know, this record is produced by the dude in Converge. But all that shit aside, whoa this record rips. Totally fucking ripping Swedish Death Metal album. It sounds like Entombed and Dismember, and those bands are kind of the only reason this record kills. And again it kills that sound, the razor sharp one that weighs a million pounds from Sweden. They are from Seattle, and I just saw they will tour here next month. Maybe they will have the LP, only the CD is out now for some dumb ass reason.

High on Fire 'Snakes for the Divine' LP 2010, E1

Well everybody knows about High on Fire, probably to the point that that shit is not of interest due its overwhelming presence and shit. But let it not be obscured that they can fucking shred some shit so hard. This LP is the best High on Fire that I've heard since 'The Art of Self Defense' (2000), though they kill a club show always. On this one they got it right, it is a genuine Heavy Metal record with epic songs and shredding guitar solos and Heavy Metal drums and bass that straight pound with trueness. Motorhead has given them the seal of approval, and this dude was in Sleep, so a million years later they are still doing it right and now I listen to them again. Banging on shit, good recording, Frazetta style cover art= that shit. Theres a ton of slaying records out right now, 'break yo self fool!'

Above we have the amazing work of Jim Phillips, an icon of skateboard art and a truly talented man. Below that, we have a graphic that is becoming increasingly visible around Atlanta. Is it just me, or is there a strong resemblance between the two? In the art world referencing and appropriation are welcomed. Picasso himself said "good artists borrow, great artists steal." Hell, Richard Prince made a whole career out of doing a little cropping of Marlboro ads. Sherrie Levine directly copied Walker Evans photography, Duchamps urinals...I could go on. Both Prince and Levine site the original material. In fact, it is this original material that makes this work important.

From what I can tell, there is no reference or mention of Mr. Phillips work in this instance, and this is a problem. We all have our idols and people that we look up to. Usually those people manifest themselves in some way in our own personalities, whether it is one's art or simply a way of thinking. Borrowing someone elses' idea to further your own is great, but plagiarism is completely unacceptable.

Twilight 'Monument To Time End' LP 2010, Southern Lord Recordings

This is US Black Metal group Twilight's new LP, it is their second full-length and it is a total slayer. This band is hailed as a super union of heavy hitting US Black Metal guys, Wrest (Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice), Azentrius (Nachtmystium), Malefic (Xasthur), and the dude from Krieg and from Draugar. They shredded shit, and the first Twilight LP (2005) slayed. Bleak and heavy and filled with dark blast beats and howls, the s/t LP was great but then the band split up. So anyways member by member they reformed last year (except the guy from Xasthur), and in Chicago they did this collaborative album. Lots of visitors dropped in on it, including A.Turner (Isis), and a dude from Om, end result is that the new LP sounds nothing like the first one. On this LP, the depth of the songs and overall feel of it is endlessly vast and layered with swirling, sinister sounds that make for an epic journey listen. The first LP was like being stabbed to death; this second one is like being killed by demons in outer space during the most realistic nightmare ever. It inevitably has some Leviathan-esque sonics but thats because the guy kills shit on drums. This whole record is wicked, no stone is left unturned, its authentic. Tons of melodic riffs and mooded brutality, experimental noises, held together with pulverizing drums. All in all, Monument To Time End is a depressingly heavy record, a whole and very creative release that rips and makes US Black Metal look wicked to the rest of the world. And the production is huge, way huger than the last one, which sounded like it was recorded in a coffin. This one super thick, all these guys know what they are doing and so the LP strait kills. The Southern Lord vinyl release happens soon, this record rules.

Tomorrow eve will be the first in a series of Octane patio grill-outs celebrating good beer and even better wieners: Wiener Wednesday!

Wiener Wednesday is in conjunction with our weekly Hop City Beer tastings- where you can come enjoy samples of free craft beers and meet brewmasters and other beer fans. This week we will feature the Oskar Blues Brewery out of Lyons, Colorado. Oskar makes goodies like Old Chub, Dales Pale Ale, and Mama's Little Yella Pils which we will be pushing out on the patio as well.

Darkthrone Circle the Wagons LP 2010, Peaceville Records

Smashing the fuck out of some shit once again, the mighty Darkthrone return from the snow capped mountaintops of Norway to perform genocide on fakers of Heavy Metal. Grandfathers of the Church of Real Metal, their visionary wrecking blackened speed Heavy Metal Punk is flawless on this new one, which completes the triad they have built within the past 5 years or so with Fuck Off and Die(2007), Dark Thrones and Black Flags(2008), and now Circle the Wagons(2010). For real all of those records are the greatest version of old school Heavy Metal happening in the present and that shit is beyond wicked. They are the masters of this type of thing and this new LP of theirs totally slays. It is their fucking 15th album, but I was so excited for months about its release but now its out and so Hell Yeah. They are one of the top all time greatest bands ever without question. Darkthrone vinyl is always hard to get, the first pressing is gone already. But if you recognize that Darkthrone is the end all name of True Heavy Metal Professors then you will likely be blessed with one of these LPs, I seek that path for myself at least. Hail!
