October 9th is Leif Erikson Day

Contrary to what most Americans have learned in school, Christopher Columbus wasn't the first Euro dude to set foot on the soil of the new world...a crazy viking had done seeeeen that shit nearly 500 years before that exploitative, gold diggin' slave owning murderer... Although Leif wasn't a perfect man either, his story seems a bit more desirable than Colombos. He landed on what is now Newfoundland, built some huts, found some grapes, ate some fish and got drunk and left. Leif was born around 960 AD, son of Eric the Red, and was supposedly banned from Iceland and Norway during his teens. He led his first expedition at age 24. Go drink some mead and explore!

...and check out Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress by Howard Zinn, for some real truth...

Columbus showed up at my high school graduation and tried to dominate a hand full of women there. What a presumptuous prick! This is not the 15th century... sheesh.
