ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Breathing Fire 'Years Of Lead' LP 2009, Painkiller Records
Ok well this shit rips. "I believe in slime and stink, in every crawling putrid thing. I believe...in you." Yes. Smashing your head, smashing your mind. These guys are from Massachusetts, and this is their first full length and it rips. These guys pull of a sound that I can't get enough of, a harsh and very strong sonic attack reminiscent of all things ugly and angry. The fury is unmistakable, they smash through every joint on this LP with gritty, grimy volume. Its sort of hard to tell what is happening at times, if they are sounding sloppy or the music is moving too fast for my ears to grasp. Either way it slays, properly and completely. I'd be surprised to learn if they were not down with Mind Eraser, being that this came out on Painkiller Records and they are also from Massachusetts. Something must be poppin in New England right now because, seriously, Breathing Fire/Mind Eraser slaaaaaaay. Downtuned and heavy ripping from beginning to end, frantic and straight grinding at times. Its obvious that quite a bit of Crossed Out studying has taken place here but it has this messy, blown out sound that reminds me of some My War-era Black Flag or some LA post punk sounds due to the vocal delivery and general craziness. I'm not so quick to thrown in the powerviolence label, though it is, more or less. I think its better to just leave it at Hardcore, of the best kind imaginable. This shit rules...the Years Of Lead LP is far superior to their 2004 demo, rereleased by Painkiller on a 7" in 2007 and a great demo at that- it created the buzz for a release like this. How rad as fuck it is, when a band totally delivers on their LP after planting the seed years earlier with raging demo material. As we know, hype can kill, but on occasion it can make some ruling shit happen and thats what happened here. This is some serious stuff, once again the remarkable similarity to Mind Eraser makes that shit beat the fuck out of most other things that call itself 'hardcore' these days and I say fuck yeah. Fuuuck Yeah even. I know exactly what the fuck I want to hear when I put a record on and drop the needle, and how great, though confusingly rare, it is to have someone else making these records for me and fully know that yes, this is the shit, it slays, here you go, wear yourself out. Anyways you can get it direct on some clear wax from Painkiller Records.
p.s.- Aly, blessings to you on your travel. We will miss you a lot! x o
